20 August 2011 Rugby Matches against Edgemead
1st Team
The Fairmont 1st Team put Edgemead to the sword in a most comprehensive win over rivals Edgemead. With pride on the line and Fairmont looking to keep their unbeaten record against Edgemead intact, it promised to be a tense game of rugby from teams passionate about the great game. Fairmont started with guns blazing by scoring a try in the first 5 minutes with winger Timothy Cronje scoring the first try, followed by a sensational try by Yazeed Pather. The day belonged to the backline who scored seven tries, with right wing Timothy Cronje adding a total of four tries to help end Edgemead’s passionate campaign for victory.
Fairmont was down to 14 men at the end of the game owing to some severe injuries letting in two tries, but by then the game was over and Edgemead were left to rue the day they came up against a formidable Fairmont team. Congratulations to the Fairmont Bears! The forwards created the platform and the backs did what backs were meant to do and scored the tries. An excellent game played with guts and glory from both teams.
Final score: 41-12
Tries: Timothy Cronje (4), Yazeed Pather, Qit Qat Baleka, Warren Heaney
Conversion: Paulo Pedro (3)

From the kick off Fairmont attacked and forced two early penalties that led to a scrum 5 metres from the try line. Reece Sherratt and Darren van Vulpen had a determined charge over the try line in the 3rd minute, but the Edgemead defence managed to push them out over the touchline. A scrum won near the halfway line saw four phases run and Calvin Paul crossing over the try line, but unfortunately he was judged as being held up. Edgemead then attacked and were awarded the first try in the 12th minute. Fairmont retaliated and John–Levi van den Berg scored Fairmont’s first try in the 15th minute. Darren van Vulpen converted taking Fairmont into the lead. After cleaning up on our 22 yard line Fairmont ran five phases that led to our second try by Peter Mannix in the 22nd minute. Fairmont went into half time with a 12 - 5 lead.
The 2nd half saw Darren van Vulpen running Fairmont’s third try within one minute after the kickoff. Edgemead continued attacking but were only able to score another try in the 45th minute. Fairmont managed to defend this score till the end whistle.
The final result was 19 – 10 in Fairmont’s favour.
The “Man of the Match” was award to John–Levi van den Berg.

U15 Team
Edgemead Derbies are normally a torrid affair and we weren’t disappointed this year. Fairmont climbed in early and dominated a plucky Edgemead team. We got onto the board with an early penalty kick, slotted beautifully between the uprights by Steven Craeye. Both teams executed decent phases and before half time, new-comer Josh Sykes, at wing, battled over in the corner to put us 8-0 up at the break.
After the break, Edgemead came to the game with purpose and were rewarded with a try, 8-5. Fairmont’s revised backline strategy kicked in from a set piece and Matthew Augustine at 2nd centre put together a remarkable series of jinks to find space and run around the outside of Edgemeads’ rather quick right wing, and score under the sticks, converted by Steven Craeye.
15-5 and proud! Silencing the Lambs of Edgemead, well played gents, great composure and determination, this was a good day.

U14 Team
An all out attack from Edgemead saw them getting over the try line after only ten minutes of play resulting in the score being 5-0. Fairmont then had a good period of attack. It was during one of these attacking periods that Ryan McIntosh went over for Fairmont’s first try, only for the referee to disallow it. After twenty five minutes of play we were back on attack and at nearly the same spot Ryan got the ball and broke the line to score a try. Grant Nell then converted a difficult kick to give Fairmont the lead of 7 – 5 at half time.
The second half again saw Edgemead attacking from the start and within five minutes they went over for their second try, this was due to some bad defence from our backline. The score was then 10 – 7 to Edgemead. We again went through some phases of very good attack but just could not finish off the hard work. Over aggression was also a factor we had to deal with which resulted in Edgemead receiving a warning. We played well, right to the end. The final score was 10 – 7 to Edgemead.
