1st Team

The Fairmont 1st Team put Edgemead to the sword in a most comprehensive win over rivals Edgemead.  With pride on the line and Fairmont looking to keep their unbeaten record against Edgemead intact, it promised to be a tense game of rugby from teams passionate about the great game. Fairmont started with guns blazing by scoring a try in the first 5 minutes with winger Timothy Cronje scoring the first try, followed by a sensational try by Yazeed Pather. The day belonged to the backline who scored seven tries, with right wing Timothy Cronje adding a total of four tries to help end Edgemead’s passionate campaign for victory.

Michelle van Sittert, one of our drummies was a member of this prestigious team.   The WP Trio team of which Michelle was a member won their division.  Michelle was also nominated as one of the 5 leaders of the leader squad.  This too is an excellent achievement.

Fairmont 1st Team lifts Boys Summer League Hockey Trophy

Fairmont High School has won the summer league hockey trophy for 2011. The last three matches were crucial, as there were a number of schools that were still in the running at that stage. The match against Paarl Boys High was won (1 – 0) by Fairmont in the dying moments of the game. The one and only goal was scored by Peter Kempton-Jones.

The match, the following week against Settler’s, was a spectacular game to watch with Fairmont dominating most of the time. The match was played in a good spirit with Fairmont winning 3 – 0 with goals by Daniel Siddons, Michael Schmitz and Fabio Tallon.

The final match was played on Wednesday 16 March against Edgemead with Fairmont again dominating the game and scoring 3 goals to nil. The goals were scored by Warren Taylor, Kieran Gatenby and Daniel Siddons.

This summer league hockey season proved to be a well deserved victory for the Fairmont High School. The other schools participating in the summer league were The Settlers, Edgemead, Paarl Boys, Milnerton, Brackenfell and Table View.

Fairmont U16 Boys share the Boys Junior Summer League Hockey Trophy

In spite of winning three of their league matches by large margins, then beating Paarl Boys High School 2 – 1,  Fairmont were held to a 1-all draw by the Western Cape Sports School. This game between the two schools was a wonderful exhibition of schoolboy hockey, with the superbly fit and well-drilled in ball skills team from the Sports School playing against the skilful and super-fit Fairmont team, who have been doing fitness training 3 days a week in the early morning, since the beginning of the term. The Sports School was established by the Western Cape Education Department in Kuilsriver, and is open to any boy, talented in sport from under-privileged communities. No words can describe the pleasure it has been to have such a talented, committed and well-behaved team join our summer league this year.

Cape Columbine Nature Reserve (Tieties Bay)

12-13 March 2011

This vs. That (Expect the unknown)

After arriving at school on Saturday morning we departed around 08:00.  We arrived at 10:00 at the entrance to Cape Columbine, (Tieties Bay) Nature Reserve.

The boys were divided into four groups and had to jog to the camp site 2½ km away.  Our parents were asked to go and settle in at the camp site and cheer the boys on as they came up the well-known dune in Tieties Bay.

They had lunch and leisure time after which we went into serious safety and general rugby coaching skills, where some of our dads were also involved with some of the drills and holding tackle shields and bags.

We broke for leisure time and met up later in the afternoon.  We did forward skill training and running skills with the back lines.   After supper (Potjiekos) the boys, parents and coaches got together around the fire, where each group was given the opportunity to do their “War Cry”.

The group leaders were also given time to tell everybody how the game of rugby has changed their lives.  All u19 rugby players made a vote for the captain of the first rugby team.  Stuart Austin will be the captain of our 1ST XV Rugby Team 2011.

After all that excitement we had a few motivational speeches from some of the dads and the management of rugby in general after which Mr Leibbrandt ended the evening off with a prayer.

The next morning the boys went for a jog to the lighthouse.  When they came back, we went on a hiking trail to the farm called “Soet Water”, where to the surprise of all the new boys there was no “Soet Water”.  After returning from the hike the boys had their brunch.  They then thanked everybody and were free to leave the camp.

On behalf of Fairmont High School Rugby, thank you to all our parents, players, coaches and managers who made this camp possible.
