Society Awards Evening

It was wonderful to witness the good attendance of parents and pupils at our Society Awards Celebration on Tuesday night.  Each year in the fourth term, our Senior Management Team goes away for two days to plan ahead for the following year.  In 2008 we were at a conference centre in Stellenbosch discussing our plans for 2009 when we decided that our societies, while they existed, were not enjoying the prominence in the school that they deserve.  Ms Piek put her hand up to take on the challenge of raising and focussing on the importance of the school societies. Her eagerness, passion and determination for this aspect of the school soon paid off and today we boast some 16 active societies in our school.

The primary focus in our school is academics and this is followed by keen participation in the many sports that we offer at Fairmont together with the cultural aspects of the school.  We feel that there should be something for everyone in our school and that is why we are keen for a large participation in our societies. We are aware that many of our pupils do participate in sport and culture and they still find time to be active in the societies.

Last year at our planning session it was decided that we will re-introduce the society awards that were last held in 1998 and so I am thrilled that after 12 years we find ourselves in a position once again to celebrate the participation in these activities.

I would like to thank Ms Piek, and all the teachers who so keenly give of their time to our societies.

We hope that the societies in our school will grow from strength to strength.

The following Special Awards were presented for excellence:

The Fred Astaire Western Cape Ballroom Dancing Youth Challenge Trophy for the participation of 10 of our learners who succeeded in bringing the trophy home for their collective scores throughout the competition.  The last couple “standing” – Darren Lee and Caylee Cook - received the trophy on behalf of their company.

The Fairmont Cultural Commitment Trophy is a newly founded award which acknowledges a Grade 12 learner who has served the Cultural Portfolio of the school unwaveringly for the duration of their involvement at the school.

This year’s recipient, Emily Kempton-Jones

-           participated in 5 Tygerberg Eisteddfods obtaining 80 % and above

-          involved herself in various drama productions including 2 leading roles

-          entered for Unisa’s practical exams, Grades 3 + 4, and was placed on Unisa’s

Role of  Honours for receiving results above 90 %

-          completed the Toastmaster’s Course and supported subsequent courses

-          debated in the Junior & Senior Rotary Debating Teams for a period of 5 years.

The final Special Award of the evening, the Society Shield, was last awarded to a society at Fairmont in 1998.  The shield, this year, symbolizes lots of hard work, dedication and compassion.  It was awarded to the INTERACT SOCIETY for their extensive involvement and participation throughout the year and the recognition that they received from the wider community.  Amy Glover, the capable chairperson of the society, received the award on the society’s behalf.

Myschool – “Every Swipe Counts”

Myschool_logo_for_worddocs1

Fairmont is currently on a ‘drive’ to encourage the Fairmont community to acquire or use their MySchool cards as a means of raising funds for our school, without costing the holder of the card a cent.  The card can be used at a range of national regional and local retail partners. (Please see list below).  So, we would like to encourage all moms, dads, grans, granddads, aunts, uncles, neighbours and friends to become involved in the MySchool project.  We will be handing forms to our pupils, or members of our school community may visit our webpage www.fairmont.co.za  and look for MySchool under School Shop.  We hope to have competitions rewarding the person with the most swipes or the class that has the most swipes.

We are aware that a number of parents do already use their cards.  Please support this initiative as “Every swipe counts”.

Ladies Soccer

And so all good things must come to an end…  The first team soccer ladies played their final league match on Tuesday and beat Milnerton by 3 goals to 0.  This match will certainly not be remembered as the one in which they set up a rugby score (as many of our fans have put it), but it will be remembered as the day that one of our favourite loud-mouth-players had her best game ever.  Well done, Jaime, we’re really proud of you!

Look out for next week’s soccer news where the log standings and top goal scorers will be announced.  I have taken a peek at the final scores and I can tell you that our girls definitely exceed the rest…

Rugby

2nd Team

The 2nd XV played away at Brackenfell on Saturday the 14thAugust.  Fairmont lost a closely fought encounter going down 10-5.  Special mention must be made of Andrew-Lloyd Yeo’s committed defence on the day getting across the field at great speed to cut off many try scoring opportunities.  Patrick O’Connell must be commended on his excellent leadership style and hard work rate on the field.

De Kuilen won the toss and opted to play with the sun and wind from behind.  From the kick off it was evident that the Fairmont side were keen to build on their winning experience in the last game.  They ran at the opposition and after stealing the ball from the opposition in a scrum midway in the Fairmont half, the backline played textbook rugby and passed the ball down to the wing.  After beating 4 of the opposing side’s players in a sprint for the try line, Sideeq Ismail scored the first try of the game in the 4th minute.  Darren van Vulpen converted and the team were now primed for a good game.  The De Kuilen side however dominated in the line outs, but the scrums were fairly evenly matched.  The opposition had a few runs at the Fairmont side and only managed to score one try in the first half.  After another long run Darren van Vulpen scored Fairmont’s second try in the 22nd minute.  He converted, and the half time score was 14 – 5 in Fairmont’s favour.

The second half saw a determined De Kuilen team and they attacked relentlessly.  After replacing the whole scrum with fresh players, and eventually fielding all 27 players, they managed to score 2 more tries.  Fairmont opted to defend the half time score, and unfortunately lost the ball on 4 occasions within 5 metres of the try line, and did not manage to score any more points during the game.  The final score of the match was Fairmont 14, De Kuilen 17.

The “Man of the match” was awarded to both Lee-Andrew Luiz for his determined and constant game, and Darren van Vulpen for playing a major role in the backline and fearless defence during the whole match.
